Andrew Deagman
AoA – How long have you been in Austin and how did you find your way here?
Andrew – I’ve been in Austin going on 9 years… At the time I was living in western New York and needed a change of pace. I wasn’t sure where I was headed, but an opportunity came up in Austin. I came down here, feel in love with the city and people and have been here ever since.
AoA – When did you realize that you were an artist?
Andrew – That’s a really good question. I’ve always created things… I don’t really look at myself as an artist but more as someone who creates.
AoA – Can you speak to your art training?
Andrew – While in college I formally studied photography, outside of that I’m self taught.
AoA – Where do you derive inspiration from?
Andrew – Everything.
AoA – Who are some artists that you look to?
Andrew – There are so many. In no particular order… The fluxus movement, Nam June Paik, Bill Viola, Yves Klein, Steina and Woody Vasulka, Dan Flavin, James Turrell, Robert Irwin, John Cage, ETC (Experimental Television Center), John Chamberlain, Walter De Maria.
AoA – Can you talk a little about your creative processes in creating?
Andrew – It all starts as ideas, notes, and sketches in a notebook. I’ve devised a system of iteration, so if a particular concept repeatedly surfaces I know I need to investigate it further. This usually leads to some type of small scale prototyping and experimentation…
AoA – If you could own one piece from a living artist, who would it be?
Andrew – Probably my own Skyspace by James Turrell.
AoA – Big question. What do you feel the role of art is in the world?
Andrew – In the modern world art is a vehicle for expressing emotion, seeking & speaking the truth, inspiring and connecting people, ultimately building and fostering community.
AoA – Where can we find your work? Do you have any shows planned for the future?
Andrew – I’ve been holed up in the studio working on a new video installation, which I hope to have completed in a next month or so. I have another project with Bloo Neko Records of 12 videos for their Full Moon releases. The project will be released in early 2019.
