Unruly is an Art of Austin artist!
Introducing Unruly
AoA – How long have you been in Austin and how did you find your way here?
Unruly – I moved here from Botswana in 2016 to attend university.
AoA – When did you realize that you were an artist?
Unruly – It took me awhile to realize the impact art has one my life. Once I realized the positive value of having a creative outlet.
AoA – Can you speak to your art training?
Unruly – Lots of great mentors. Trial and error and a lot of time. I’ve recently been taking some printmaking classes.
AoA – Where do you derive inspiration from?
Unruly – My inspiration comes from many different areas in my life. When I first moved to the United Stares I really missed home, it was a very difficult setting and I struggled to feel comfortable or part of the culture. I would see posters around the city from Goodluck Buddha and they all had powerful messages. It sparked something inside of me. So I began creating images influenced from memories in my life. It was sharing these images around the city that finally brought me to where I am today.
AoA – Can you tell us a little bit about what your work is concerned with?
Unruly – I have the intention of proudly representing my culture and where I come from when sharing my work.
AoA – Can you talk a little about your creative processes?
Unruly – Honestly I don’t think too much about it, whatever seems straight forward is what I go for. I tend to create images digitally and then use traditional methods to illustrate those images on layered surfaces incorporating different mediums.
AoA – Big question. What do you feel the role of art is in the world?
Unruly – Arts role is to give ANYONE the platform to have their voice/thoughts/ideas heard and seen.
AoA – Do you have any feelings towards Digital Art versus traditional mediums?
Unruly – I love digital art, I think it works beautiful in collaboration with traditional mediums.
AoA – Who are some artists that you look to?
Unruly – GoodLuck Buddha, Indecline, Tapz, Concepts Under Pressure (collective)
AoA – If you could own 1 piece from a living artist, who would it be?
Unruly – A miniature piece from Joshua Smith.
AoA – What else do you enjoy besides making art?
Unruly – I enjoy a natural mystic blowing through the air.
AoA – Where can we find your work? Do you have any shows planned for the future?
Unruly – I post my work to my Instagram account and will be featured at this years Hops for Hope on September 28/29th at the Fairmarket.
